What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system with a history of over 5,000 years, and its principles are aimed at preserving life and increasing longevity.

In a literal translation from Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “Science of life”, and its focus is on maintaining the balance between the physical and the subtle bodies.

It is believed that initially it has been practiced by Indian monks who are responsible for its popularity; they looked at the body as a temple and considered good physical health as helpful for spiritual development.

Treatment with the help of Ayurveda

Certainly, there are significant differences between western conventional medicine and the methods used by Ayurveda during the treatment.

The main difference is that modern medicine is trying to cure the symptoms of the disease using medications, while Ayurveda is looking for the root cause of the disease and is interested and aims at healing the cause, not the consequences of it. Ayurveda gives us knowledge of how to prevent disease and how to eliminate the root cause in the beginning.

Another significant feature of ayurvedic medicine is that the physical body, the soul, the emotions and the temperament of a person are inextricably linked, and if an imbalance occurs somewhere, it can affect the other aspects, because in Ayurveda everything is seen as one.

An interesting fact is that Ayurvedic physicians are trained in all areas of medicine, they must have knowledge of any field such as pediatrics, mental health, ENT, reproductive medicine, surgery, general medicine, geriatrics, and others, in order to be able to provide the patient with complete treatment of the disease process.

During the ayurvedic examination, the Ayurveda physician gets thoroughly acquainted with your health condition, and he asks a lot of questions related to your lifestyle, your habits, foods that you eat, level of physical activity and so on. The examination is also done through the so-called pulse diagnostics (Nadi), and in addition to pulse measurement, it can also include check-up of urine, feces, an examination of the tongue for coating, check up of vision and skin sensitivity, as well as of voice, and so on.

After the end of the examination, the ayurvedic doctor assesses the health condition of the patient and makes definitive recommendations with regard to a lifestyle that should be followed by him, and he makes prescriptions for the treatment of the diseases and recommends the suitable ayurvedic therapies related to it.

According to Ayurveda, the main cause of a disease process is an imbalance of the energies in the body. What does it mean? Ayurveda believes that every person comes to Earth with a personal genetic code, and this code reflects the energy that flows in every spectrum of our physical body – here comes the energies on a physical, physiological, mental and emotional level. Ayurveda calls these energies Doshas /the doshas are 3 – Pitta, Kapha and Vata/, and in each person, there may be a dominance of one or two doshas, and there may be an absolute balance between the three doshas /energies/, the so-called three dosha balance.

When one of our energies goes out of balance /or if it becomes too weak or too active/, this is the basis on which the onset of disease can occur.

If two or three of the doshas become imbalanced then we talk about severe diseases that are difficult to be treated.

Therapies in Ayurveda

As we mentioned after the ayurvedic examination, the doctor can recommend a change in the lifestyle, as well as in habits – way of eating and way of thinking, and the next step includes the ayurvedic therapies. They are divided into 2 individual categories: Puvakarma and Panchakarma therapies. Puvakarma is introductory therapies that prepare the body for more serious methods of treatment. These therapies include pouring the body with oils, oil massages, body cleansing, but only externally. While the Panchakarma therapies purify the body through a complex of therapies on a deep and internal level – these include vomiting, laxatives, blood purification, enema, etc.

Ayurveda is a complex science and includes various approaches in the treatment of a disease, resulting from the idea that a person is unique, therefore the healing approach should also be unique.

There are two very successful Ayurveda treatment centers in Bulgaria that follow the ayurvedic methods – one of the clinics is located in the Bansko winter resort – Ayurveda Clinic Bansko, and the second one is located in Sofia city, the capital of Bulgaria – the clinic is called Ayurveda Clinic Sofia.

Treatment in both clinics is performed by a team of Indian doctors and therapists, and all herbs, oils, and medicines are imported from India.
